Subculture in the Spotlight: Anonymous
We have all discovered from time to time groups of people gathering together for things we can't help but wonder to ourselves; why? Sometimes we see people doing weird things in public, way to freaky for comprehension. Well if you see something reocurring or just a vast number of individuals participating, chances are its some sort of fandom subculture. Here is one example, Anonymous.
Anonymous is just as stated, anonymous. Their creedo is "We Are Anonymous, We are legion, We do not Forgive, We do not Forget, Expect Us." And its a true statement, Anonymous members can usually be found at only certain events, and are usually wearing things to conceal their real identity, EG masks, balaclavas, Afros and other wigs, and a suit usually goes in accord. The "Guy Fawkes Mask" or simply for outsides, 'the guy from V for Vendetta, his mask' is the predominant piece attire.
Anonymous and its members with all their beliefs started on an American Anime discussion site, known as 4chan.org, around October 2003. The site has many discussion boards, now more then half not even about anime. But in 03 there was one board called the Random Board. It quickly grew to be the most popular. Many things would be posted there, some would get really popular, like forever the internet will remember 'cats with funny macros', as 4chan's random made that famous internet content popular to post.
The typical life of an Anon (single member of anonymous) consists of lurking online, many websites that are relevant to Anonymous's interests. Rather it being 4chan, 7chan, or a host of other chans, Encyclopedia Dramatica, Ebaums World, or many others. Some others include targets for raids, which Anonymous loves to do. Like one, poking fun at Scientology. And in 2007 anonymous protested Scientologist's beliefs, and many funny intresting things happened from there, and they officially gained global status as an elite subculture.
If this sounds intresting to you, even in the slightest, check out 4chan's random board when your free, you can post funny content, rant, rave, talk about problems, you name it we can help. http://4chan.org/b
